Quality early childhood education programs incorporate play as a central element in the curriculum with consideration of both individual- and group-level differences. ABSTRACT: The role of play is critical to the learning process in early childhood education settings. International researches indicate the advancement of children's learning when engaged in active play. However, little research has been conducted in Philippine settings on the use of play in teaching literacy in early childhood education though the value of play in learning and development is accepted and the play based curriculum is favored in the field, how play is placed in the classr ooms by teachers is still uncertain (Renge l, 2014; Wood & Be nnett, 1998). In early childhood settings, children’s learning experience depends on teachers’ pedagogical view, knowledge and early childhood, learning is taking place at a speed that will never be equalled.5 The preschool (or pre-primary) education years fall in the middle of the early childhood period and lay the groundwork for success in school and beyond.6 Although this brief is focused on the pre-primary years, we note that learning through play is relevant Pramling-Samuelsson I., Sheridan S.
